Vocabulary
Vocabulary, much more than grammar, is the key to your child understanding what she hears and reads in school; and to communicating successfully with other people. For this reason it is very important for her to quickly build up a large store of words. Research studies have shown the strong links between having an extensive vocabulary and achieving school success.
Creating anchor charts with students is a great way to motivate students to use new vocabulary words.

My kindergarten students have a difficult time describing how a character feels. Next school year I plan to teach character feelings and emotions more explicitly. This chart is a good example of character emotions. These types of question also appear in the Fountas and Pinnel comprehension assessment.

can be adapted for a variety of grade levels.
